As a small exercise in local science experiments which hold a direct association for Bantam engines the following might be of some interest. As you stand at the kitchen sink scraping away at that encrusted pan which housed the now defunct Christmas turkey get the cold tap running steadily but smoothly and, lightly and loosely hold a dessert spoon, I use a metal one 7 inches long, at the very end of its handle. Slowly move your hand toward the flowing water, as the two make contact you will feel the pull exerted on the curved spoon face, maintain that position and see the, not quite laminar, flow of water being maintained. This is a dramatic and clear image of the Coanda effect taking place.
It is not difficult to appreciate the cooling impact this attached flow can make to a hot piston crown and to the flow coefficient of inner duct of a transfer passage.
Enjoy the washing up!
