Eric Theobold Memorial Trophy

Hi Guys
does anybody have any knowlage of the Eric Theobold Memorial Trophy?

Who was Eric Theobold?
What was the Trophy awarded for?
Were is the Trophy now?
I was awarded the Trophy in 1983 ,I won the 50 miler on Neds spare bike that year so it could be conected to this race.
A name above mine on the plinth at that time was the great Neil Tuxworth , now a bit big for a 125 but a great TT competeter in his day.

I dont remember "TUX" riding at a bantam meeting and I was involved with the club from its first days.

Neil Tuxworth certainly did win the inter enduro as it was called then at sometime during the seventies despite him being a decent national rider at the time. Of course I know this as my dad finished second that year and always felt cheated that Tuxworth was allowed to compete at that level. Justice came in '82, I think, when dad won the 50 miler lapping everyone upto third place in the wet )

My brother won it in 1980 beating Martin Perry and also the same day(but earlier) the Novice Enduro (25 miles) beating Keith Woods so going from a bantam Novice so a Senior within the same afternoon... I think Jane may have the Trophy?

Don't mention Tex on here unless you want John Bass going into one.

In a post dated 15th July,I made a brief reference to Eric Theobald.Eric,along with Rodney Gooch,Rob Ware,Chris Rogers,and Willie Morgan made up the members of Team Wizard in the late 60's.They were South East members.Unfortunately I don't know how the Memorial Trophy started,nor in which year.

I am fairly certain that Neil Tuxworth started out on Bantams.He certainly rode Bantams,with the BRC,in the late 60's and possible into the 70's.I seem to recall that he rode a Terry Beckett tuned bike.They were South East members.

Mansfield was my best corner -- well, the brakes on Icarus-1 weren´t all that good and being ex-Grasstrack, left-handers were best-favourite bends which meant I had an advantage over any of the Louth locals. Having passed one of the aforementioned thro´ Mansfield I felt a knee viciously shoved into my right thigh which had me onto the grass before the OLD hairpin -- TWICE!
There are probably oldies out there who remember that incident who told me I should make a protest but I put it down to `close competition and matelyness´ with perhaps an unmentionabkle tendency some males have towards other males.

On a more modern note: why the chicane just before that OLD hairpin...??

Like all chicanes John, that would be to slow riders down.

Shot at indeed.
Rather silly when the objective is to get racing motorcycles to go as fast as
possible with the test of skill to outbrake opponents.
Particularly the Bantam. Particularly Icarus-1 -- no need for brakes on that
machine -- just pray for a wind behind that subsides in the opposite direction.
That one Bantam could be so much faster than all the others on the start straight
also has me puzzled. It was passing 250s long before the hill to Charlies....
He who would remain nameless suggested its engine was
mostly Japanese ....

PS -- even the IoM circuit is modified to make it quicker. Just makes my heart
bleed to see an unneccessary chicane....

The Chinese have made so much progress in the manufacturing of
automobiles and auto parts that it would not surprise me to find
some of their "Squeeze Cast" pistons in Bantam race machines.
Maybe conn-rods and crankshaft assemblies too.

Sunday 25th Sept... 2011 was the first Bantam race I´d seen where there
was such a long straight from the start that I was dumbfounded at how
quick Mark Carcreek got off the line and was overtaking two-fifties. But
reading -- again -- about the Walsh Bantam in Ozzy that is what used
to happen there with Maurice Quincy on board -- without a resonant pipe.
The Walsh Bantam had a megaphone exhaust and was running on methanol
fuel and apparently he repeatedly beat many 250s also.

But back to Mark´s(?) Bantam: Very small Chinese flywheels was my
immediate guess ...??

Sorry Ray -- I thought I was on the other topic where brickbats were flying.
I knew Rodney Gooch and the others by sight having started building my first Bantam, Icarus-1, in the late sixties and run it with a 150cc motor in late 1968-
...
Good idea Ray, to stick to the topic -- I wish I could ... A memorial trophy must mean the man did something worthwhile other than having a fascinating surname... so someone out there knows what it was....?
