Something went wrong on "Returning To Bantam, Racing"

I got Derek´s reply to my earlier statement of dyno test being a pain ... because of small changes often showing-a-lot or nothing-at-all and weather ambient conditions cocking-up -- or cooking -- the results...

... and went to reply on the above title but found I could not -- just a stream of letters followed ... For a frightening moment I thought I´d been wormed again....

... so, maybe the fault it is here at my PC -- so I´ll say it here & now:--

What I said -- with tongue in cheek -- was that the correction factors should be applied to direct dyno-results because of severe changes in ambient temperature & pressure plus wet & dry buld temperature indicating humidity will give what looks like a "good" result from a small change which might not look quite so good when the correction factor is applied. In other words the improvement was not attributable to a change made (in the engine) but to a change in the weather....

WHAT IS ALSO TRUE IS THE OPPOSITE -- A HINDRANCE TO DEVELOPMENT IS WHEN A DIRECT READING LOOKS BAD AND IT IS NOT, BECAUSE OF A WEATHER CHANGE. i.e. Comparing a dyno (direct) reading when the weather is cold-and-damp with a reading when the conditions are hot-&-dry and you have made a small change (say to transfor port shape) will tell you wrongly that the change was crap when in reality it had made an improvement.

I`ll leave that to be mulled over and criticised as is the wont -- adding that comparing the American SAE j 1349 Standard with the German Norm DIN 70 020 shows the former (American) uses 25°c (298°K) as its standard for air temperature whereas the latter (German) uses 20°c (293°K) in the correction factor which means there is a slight difference in use of Correction Factor and whichever Standard is used must be stuck to thro´out....

In the case of say working during winter with hardly any changes in humidity, ambient temperature and pressure the above concern is almost unfounded but it is wise to have a humidity checking device somewhere adjacent to the dyno test area to watch for severe differences when making development changes.

At Simms, Finchley and at Ford´s R&D at Dunton the use of the whirling wet temperature thermometer was in use -- with our dyno operators´ looking much like football fans whirling their rattling clappers -- has to be really "Old-Hat" these days. I know List of Austria made an electronic device that coupled directly into the dyno computer and wonder if many of you Bantamites who´ve had your engines dyno tested were aware of that....???

Tongeu in cheek again!!?? I still think that water-injection ought to be tried (perhaps secretly) -- I think in the tranfer ports -- of a Bantam engine, just to see if it does give the power boost that I think it would.

Weather here was sunshine all day, Derek. We walked for two hours and spent another hour in a bakery where the coffee is rather special in taste and the cakes and bread are German specialities never seen in Blighty.

My letter will start who on earth do you think VODAPHONE is banning one of the most popular past times for retired past it motorcycle enthisiasts.
I will also write one letter a day to the PM asking them why VODAPHONE only paid 1.5 billion in tax when its actual tax bill is closer to 7 and in the past 10 years they have got away with 90 Bllion pounds worth of tax saving, this is all information that has eoither been read in the Papers or on TV i will also be asking why on earth dont we slap a unfriendly profit TAX on them for and when large companies use the legal loop holes to pay next to no revenue due to the cost in a court case of trying to catergorise this I would also, its easier to gibve them consession to allow them to get away wioth only paying 5% of the actual TAX this is why we all pay our 20+plus % to make up for it and borrow the rest from the IMF that our kids will need to pay pack.

Hope you get my drift untill we actually stick together and voiceour opinion we will not get anywear and continue to be walked over by Poliertisicans with no Back bone, a law system that is in this area struggles to see the right path of justise for the people it was intended to protect, that hides behind so called Euro clauses, of up manship all this sounds like a load of Gamesmanship.

I remember the time we (the club & the officials of the day) allowed John Chisnall ...³³ (John was Derek Yorke´s partner at DY´s Chelmsford workshops...) to race in Bantam events at Snetterton with his, "all aluminium `moncoque´ framed Bantam." Announcements were made before each Bantam race that John´s unique Bantam would be taking part -- first time out and all!! -- although disqualified in the results by the Formula.

Although not to Bantam Racing Formula it was a beautiful Bantam that should never have a fairing covering its unique frame. I wonder what happened to that machine?? .
