Morning Ed ,
Great images of a cracking machine , pity about the paint job but it certainly catches the eye . Strange to think that George T has actually
raced this ! What would be great is seeing the renovated bike doing a few laps at a Bantam meeting perhaps with some period Todd pipes
fitted , that would make a magical sound .

Gratefull thanks . Trevor

PostSubject: I tried...   Hogan Bantam Icon_minitimeSat Jul 21, 2012 11:22 pm

I tried sending the Hogan article and my PC seems to have gone haywire...

Instead I got an e-Mail, I sent to a bloke in Chelmsford -- from last year --
with the question, did I want to send this...?

Sorry Edward if you got the wrong e-Mail.

Fed up"

Cheers!

Hi John,

I haven't had anything yet unless it has gone to my work account.

Sorry Eddie -- I tried posting the article and got a weird message that blocked things again. Now Luke Filewalker (Avira)
informs me there are 18 `suspect´ viruses attached to an e-Mail -- dunno which one -- and I am worried about sending
this... I tried answering Les and that didn´t go -- so I am wondering if this does---
Hope I am not contaminating anyone...

Great stuff ,
Thanks again to John B and Ed , in the opening paragraph of the cyl head piece , reference is made to a previous article dated April/19/1951.
I have copy of that article, which runs to two and a half sheets of A4 ,the repro is dodgy in parts but it`s how i got it ! I also have a article
by Peter Hogan , 2009 , on Bantam racing in the 50s , illustrating their exploits and referencing engine specs .

Lastly , i have a small black and white period shot of the twin in race prep , should any one be interested , i will try and arrange for them all to be
posted on the site !

yours , nostalgicaly , Trevor

I'm interested and it all builds to the history of bantam racing.

PostSubject: Do it Trevor...   Hogan Bantam Icon_minitimeTue Jul 24, 2012 4:56 am

Do it Trevor...
Maybe it will be explained how at that time -- early 50s -- what sort of fuel they were using because with my scrambler at 8.5:1 CR I was having to mix pure Benzine with Pool petrol to stop it pinking... and I wonder if the 9:1 CR spoken of was based on exhaust port closure or full stroke volume?? I imagine some of the readers who´d installed a Hogan head and were still running on Pool petrol would be somewhat annoyed when their Bantam seized. The article writer there -- not the Hogans -- was the one to blame but I bet it did happen that Hogan got the blame.

Cheers!

All very interesting.. am i right the pic's of the Hogan twin bantam were taken at the Festival of 1000 bikes Ed?
I didn't see it but only went outside of race paddock the once.. Lets hope its arunner next year?

Its amazing to see the topic's we have talked about on the forum recently - ccr - heavy crank/flywheel were also
the topic of conversation 60 years ago - All summed up in the last paragraph in the article Trevor/Ed posted.

PostSubject: Thruxton...   Hogan Bantam Icon_minitimeWed Jul 25, 2012 7:47 pm

Thruxton .. !!
The pic of john Hogan at Thruxton brought back a nemory of two wonderful Bantam rides.
Wonderful circuit. Must have been 1968 -- just two fourth places hard fought for with a
fellow by the name of French up my exhaust pipe the whole of one race. Really had to tuck
in to stop him coming alongside. His number 7 had a bar across it denoting either his foreign ancestory or because of his name... I wonder if he is still alive and kicking?

But oh! THE NAKED BANTAM LOOKS HALF A RACER -- you were right after all -- you who
voted for fairings.

Note the megaphone exhaust on John Hogan´s bike -- The walsh Bantam also used a mega....

Cheers!

anyone notice the 30 deg ignition advance, how on earth did it last, and the comp ratio is lower than one would have expected unless this is measuref from exh closing ? anyone clear this up for me.

really great shots well done for spotting that Bike ED, what a find I spent most of the day going round missed it both days though who has it it looks like Micky Nash colours.

Derek.

Derek ,
I think you may find the answer to the 30* advance on the ign lies again with the fuel , and very basic electronics of the day .
The poor fuel will be very slow burning and the weak spark combine to delay the onset of meaningful combustion , by the time
this happens the crank will have rotated by at least 10* !. So nominally we had 30* but in reality at the point of any real combustion
and heat onset the piston was way passed that point and into a safer zone ! Improve cylinder filling , and rpm and you`ll soon
be in self destruction mode !
