PostSubject: Gearing chart - 1973 style   gearing chart, anyone got one? Icon_minitimeFri Dec 14, 2007 12:04 am

Tony,

Back in 1973 the club issued one in the mag. It was for KR76 tyres (Dunlop triangulars), and showed top gear speeds for engine rpm versus gearing.

The fastest speed on it was something like 105.6 mph, to which the author had added the suffix "phew!"

With the advent of excel should be asy to knock one up if you knew tyre rolling radius, which of course a reputable company like Dunlop does still publish

No probs Tony,
The excel chart shows a factor that rises as per the gearing rises, the difference between the factors is the important bit to look for, after a cuople of gear changes you will get a feel for what the difference means on the circuit. Pete does the same thing but uses mph.
The change of a factor of 5 is V/small, a change of 15 to 20 noticably significant, a change of 20 to 30 a biggi !
I will put the chart on the main web pages when i get a minute spare from work and troubles.
Cheers,
Alan

The way I see it all circuits have got :- Start Lines, Hairpins, Straights, fast bends, slow bends, up hills, down hills. Therfore if 15/54 works for one it works for all circuits. The time saved can be better spent making bacon butties and tending barbees.

I must admit, I did change gearing once in the last two seasons for the woodlands circuit. The stress of it! never again.

Excellent Steve.

Good to have some commonsense in this forum.

Aidan and I have noticed how much less tea we drink when there' s gearing to be changed.
