Great article on Bass junior in one of the bike mags, i read it in a supermarket(cheapskate). Even mentioned the fact his old man raced Bantams, wonder who that was. Shocked

Thanks Mick!
Which mag would that be?
Do you know how he got the name `Slick´? Does it say in the article?
It all began with the Wobbleyman passing him onto Jimmy Wells...
Stay cool!

I think it was "Superbike" or somesuch monthly glossy mag, alot of nice pics too. The article, some 4 pages i think, is entitled "The man who made Foggy" or something like that. I wished i bought it now, i'll take a look in the supermarket and pick it up if it's still on the shelf.

Good man Mick,
"I dunno -- should I?" was Slick´s answer when I phoned and asked which
mag had `done´ him again. That´s his stock answer to every question.

This is how I first knew about the title: On leave from Canada -- and the Wobblyman drove me over to John Carpenter´s WorkShops (Stoke Newington, I think) to see Jim Wells, both of whom I didn´t know too well. The surprise came that Slick was there -- working. He´d been working part-time for the Wobbleyman for a couple of seasons -- as had Daughter Catherine, at odd times on race-bike prep... -- and Jimmy said, "Yeah, I`ve taken him on as an apprentice."
Meaning `Hows he doing?´I asked,
"What´s he like?"
Jim answered, "A bloody great Oil-Slick!"
I looked at my boy´s new tennis shoes -- they´d been predominantly white when we bought them -- now they were almost black and oozing sump oil from working on his buddy´s car.
Months later an article on Jim and his apprentice, "Slick" Bass appeared in the MCN. When asked how...? my lad had apparently said, "Mr Wells says I am smart, fast, efficient and precise."
He sticks to it, that the nickname was his own invention!
Thanks Mick,
Keep well,
Aye, JayBee.
