Hi James, Snell output pair's are a fair bit rarer than your normal rocking horse sensored (c.r. output pair) I didn't believe they existed for 20 years! when assured they did i went looking at auto jumbles -newark,kempton etc and found 3 pairs in 18months? and sold a pair to a fellow (current) bantam stalwart (not Ian) So they are out there or at least they were?? PostSubject: snell gears   Snell !!!! Icon_minitimeSun Aug 16, 2009 7:01 pm

Hi all - its been a while since I dropped by, all very interesting stuff.

"Mike" 20 years - such a long time, I'm bringing dad to Angle sea so make sure the kettle is on, if your going !.

wow"- Ned "glasses" always wondered why you were so late on the brakes, ?? !!!-mmmmmmm:shock:

Gears - I think your referring to the 22/25 output gears, I had a number of these made, and like Mike spent the best part of numerous years looking for them, sadly never found one set, In fact I did not believe they ever existed and they were never made by snell, Alf snell is still alive and working he rebuilds/restores LE velo heads, spoke to him on the phone, according to him he only ever made 23/24 CR output gears As per BSA drawings. strange one this!, so if he never made them -"who did" ? anyone know?? I think if they did exist they may have come from BSA's own development factory in redditch, or were made as specials by George Todd, but were never documented.

As for finding three pairs at auto jumbles Mike, "wow" fantastic!!, it may be worth exploring the original German RT125 gearboxes these were the original bantams, and had numerous ratio;s, you can often find these gearboxes on the German ebay at very reasonable prices, also there is a contact who has some original boxes for sale, sadly the last time I told some one new gearbox bits were still available, they were all sold out the next week, actual racers could not get hold of them, but please only for racers no dreamers, I have no idea on price and its not me.

I had two types of output gears made from different materials in the early 90's, EN40-B then nitride, these wore out and had root teeth issues, the others were EN36 then case hardened per BSA Spec, I initially had trouble with these distorting during heat treatment, it took two attempts to find the right company who could do it, I feel the EN36 route was better the gears never wore out and being more ductile than EN40B they never had teeth issues, But they cost more as they had to be ext/internally ground after HT.

Has anyone tried 21/26 slider gears, these move second gear closer to top. ?? rather than bringing top closer to second, "Now i think I have this the right way round. ??

Also john in new zealand had some made recently unsure how he got on with these - lost his email.

really sad to hear of the bikes being sold by the original owners, you should really look at increasing the numbers firstly by coaxing them back out, especially as some of them are still racing.

Alan what a great job your doing with this site it looks the business: I have some stuff you may want to put on this site, I'm unsure how to get it to you. I don't have the time to re type it all in this format, if you wish to contact me on this, Mike has my number.

any one heard from Andy and Diane Moulden, I was wondering how they were getting on, and what it was like in retirement.

regards Derek

hi Derek,
if you have some stuff that is useful for the web site can you put it all on disk and take it to anglesey. I will be there! If it is paper articles then I will scan the papers and use them that way.
regards,
Alan

Interesting read Dereck Smile

21 26 output have been tried by myself and Robbie and found that the jump between 2nd and 3rd was too great for racing. Tom and Brian use this output for sprinting as it gets you off the line much quicker than any other gears available and can hold the revs a little longer in 2nd before upchange whilst going in a straight line.

Catch up sometime, regards to the family, is Ed racing anything yet? Elliott's out sprinting soon

Razz cyclops Hi Tony

Nice to here from you. Edward started racing this year, between his rugby, his racing and other things life is very hectic, we should catch up some time, Ed's Racing Mini Motors hes doing OK and enjoys it much to my relief looks like I may have an excuse myself. We moved out of Birmingham I live in Worcestershire Now, what about yourself. I here your going to North wield. Dad sends his regards.

Now the topic of Gears - Either I wrote this wrong or your misunderstanding me, No not 21-26 output gears, but slider gears 21teeth on the main-shaft and 26 on the lay-shaft the one that's connecting into first gear. To fit them with close ratio gears the dogs have to be machined round and re hardened, I saw some one do this by hand with a small high speed grinder and engineers blue it took hour's before we had CNC machines, anyway hope its clear .

For your reference I'm referring to gears
BSA PART SERVICE SHEET No 501a - D group gear ratios
90-458 21 teeth slider
90-457 26 teeth slider

The part number for the output gears you are referring to are not listed on this sheet as they are I believe for a latter model, I think?, but I have two sets one kindly donated to me by Mike Powell many years ago, and another set I found in a box.

I am putting together lots of info like this for Alan to stick on the site I have one done By Mick Scutt I think it was 1973 interesting reading though.

Any other comments on the snell gears sarga from others, would be very welcome.!!

Finishing off I agree with you on the unsuitability of the 21-26 output pair for racing on a 125 though.

Kind regards Derek

Hello Derek,

I am still around and racing Bantams ocassionally. As you say I had some made by a local engineer on some super whizzo CAD / CNC diamond cutting gear machine. I have one set in my ss wc racer and another in my longstroke ac 125 motor. Both still going strong. I also swapped a pair for some parts with a certain well known UK Bantam racer, maybe if he can remember he has them he might let you know how they are going. We had the wc ss motor apart in January, the gears still looked very good. Ia m away from home at present, when I am back on Sunday I can look up the specs of steel used etc. The only slight design issue we had was how much to allow for shrinkage of the internal spline of the LS 22T with the case hardening. Presumably BSA had worked this out and had a broach that gave an ID that gave a good tight fit on the LS. The tightest set is in UK, both mine were sliding fit and stuck on with green Loctite and have been fine.
If there was enough interest and money was put up front I will get some more made. Cost depends on the number we get. Last lot were ~NZ$570 a pair, so depending on exchange rate could be around 200+ quid.
Still have the Ned head I got from your Dad, hope to get it on my ac 185 for Pukekkohe Festival next year. Best Wishes too all, John
