| Hi Mike! Are you including scrambles, dirt & grass track -- or is the theme only road racing? Cheers! JayBee. | |

| Got in a muddle with the titles on here so I´ve deleted and started again... ... First racing motorcycle was a 1951 350cc Enfield Bullet Scramber. Bought from Hadler´s Chelmsford as the "real thing for scrambling". It was utter rubbish. Rear suspension units collapsed, the oil pump fouled up and the Babbit-metal big-end failed... Mid fifties: made a Bitza 250 for Grass track: 1937 AJS (250) engine, Norton gear box, Velocette MAC frame into which I grafted an Ariel swinging-arm, front forks were Matchless, front wheel Ariel and rear wheel was Norton. Didn´t know what to call it and it ended up as `Bass-terd´... Using Methanol fuel and 10.1 CR it was competitive and I got some good races out of it. Bought a Bantam 125 Grasstracker, for a fiver, which just didn´t steer and after being thrown off several times sold it for a tenner. Fitted Tom O´Connor´s (Rayleigh Speedway Captain´s ) ex-4-Stud, Speedway engine (cost 75 quid back in the 50´s...) into the Enfield Bullet and with AMC rear units had some good results on grass and practice on Speedway circuits. Was the "Jelly Machine" because of the 350 frame harbouring the 500 JAP with 16:1 compression ratio using Victor Martin Dirt-Track (Meth...) fuel... Dealer in Maldon offered me his 350 and 500cc Hagons for the 1960 season which I turned down in favour of taking up a State Technical Scholarship and studying full-time --- There followed 9 years of study, marriage and domestication with 2 kids ... Borrowed Hagon Grassers for more grass track racing and speedway practice -- and often used track spares at Hackney and Rye House. ... First Bantam, Icarus-1, racer was the work of three of us, Derek Neil (Colin Neil´s brother) for engine, Les White all turning and machining and me as bicycle parts ... Les found the engine in a pile of junk in an Essex field. Free Cadmium plating of the frame (after welding the necessary bits...etc...) was by courtesey of some mechanics in Leyland Motors Ltd who were keen club racers... Continetal Sports front tyre and Dunlop roadster rear to start with.... Icarus-2 was made for 40quid -- I had the CR gears already... Never got it to be reliable... it would rev to 11500 and go well fior a few laps before going pooF! -- Experimented with "Centre-Point Steering" which Wobbleyman reckoned was done to kill him... Andy Boyle lent me ABS 250 to race and after getting it sorted in `72 had some good rides in `73 but ambition took over and I slipped off to Germany-Canada in ´74... ... So thinking about it I only ever owned ONE pukka (shop bought) MC racer: that awful 350 Enfield Bullet --- all the rest were BITZAS. ... Cheers! JayBee. Cheers! John-Boy! | |

| My list of racing exploits as follows! and I have to say I may well have forgotten a lot (its the old Grey matter you know!). First Home built 125 long stroke bantam racer 1972/3 Second racer based on a Hibbs rolling chassis and my engine from previous bike. GT250M production racer (also went to work on it!) Single cylinder YZ250 racer (didn't last long!) Brads 50 air cooled (sponsored ride) Brads 50 watercooled (it tended to sieze on the worst corners!) Greeves Silverstone (borrowed bike.. my god it was fast!) AS1 Yamaha racer (pretty crap) AS3 based Van Dongen Yamaha (desperately unreliable) Bantam 3 built from a bike from Paul Kean (got a lap record on this!)
After a lot of years lay off. Started again in 2003
The bantam I have now.. base loosely on Di Moulden's chassis. Rode Djurassi 175 Coombes 125 Bramleys 125 (blue ex-Ted) Ian Scutts air cooled spare from about 4 years ago) I am sure there were others... Alan | |
