| I found this 3 speed Layshaft First gear amongst a pile of used Bantam gears I acquired from an old dealer a while ago. It should have 28 teeth like a BSA CR one but has the squared dog slots like a standard gear. Has anyone seen anything like this before ? Of course it may not be Bantam originally ! | |

I have found one similar before, I think I put pictures on page 25 of New Build-Learners Topic.
Kind Regards

| A nice piece of work Dan. I must have watched a different decade of Blue Peter, I thought things were made from Fairy Liquid bottles carried in by a Collie dog !!
Seriously tho, I guess you made your LS 1st to mate with a standard 25T sliding second gear. We modified some D1 and D7 Std sliders to have oval dogs to match the CR 1st. I am not an engineer, but I wonder why BSA chose round dogs for CR LS 25T ? It would seem logical to have a maximal contact area with a gear that has a high torque load. | |

| Hello john. I modded the standard 2nd drive dogs by grinding the od.the holes in the new gear are normal cr dia just squared off And through holes, so any wear on the gear you can stone it off and use the other side. | |

| this gear, allows the use of a std box slider gear to be used in a close ratio box setup, and so many of them still available from auto jumbles, for next to nothing, I obtained box of bits all in excellent condition from such places for £3.0, where as the special close ratio boxes made by BSA will set one back many hundreds of pounds.

| thanks mike, i may do in the future and i'll bare it in mind, but so far the home brew first and 2nd are holding up fine, the issues i had at lydden were going from 2nd to top gear, sometimes it'd miss and not engage , after a bit of thinking i've changed the gear lever position , and checking the gears reveled an almighty countersink on the 2nd layshaft cog , changed over to the older style hollow gears and double drive dog shafts, of course testing will tell . | |
