Hi all,

Right, down to business; I'm not at the stage of re-assembling the engine. I have bought new seals, bearings, 2 sets of gaskets (didn't know I already had a seat!) and numerous other new bits. I'm now on the crankshaft assembly, and all was fine. Then I tried fitting my oil seals and the main bearing oil seal was too small, and then, looking through what I collected from the engine when I prised it apart, was an ally(?) oil seal! Crazy! I've included photos of this wonder haha, can anyone explain for this? It has marks on it where the flywheel shimms have put been on. This is slightly discouraging I gotta say, seeing my new oil seals won't fit the main bearing hole!

P.s. cleaned the cases so you guys won't have to ever glimpse again at my grimmy old cases!

Hi Tim look at the drawing done by Andy Moulden under general preparation originally done by Martin Parmer, go to the home page :

so i think it goes :click on engine tuning, :then go to general preparation by martin parmer the drawing im refering to is on about third / fourth page down, you need to turn a spacer to move the bearings inwards approx 4/5mm so they are next to the crank, this helps support the crack more/better, its the same on both the drive side and timing side some measuring is required, also you will need to plug up the crankcase lubrication holes on the drive side crankcase not sure you have one on the timing side can not see it.

this advice is for racing, all the information you need is on the site to rebuild and will tell you what you need to know to do what you need to do.

Hi Derek and Robbie,

Cheers for the posts, I'll have a look now and report back.

Derek, I haven't tried plugging the oil holes, bearings spacers, or anything yet. I will do that later. Don't think I will be able to turn up spacers seeing I have no access to a lathe or other engineering tools. All doing it just by a few toolboxes and classic car knowledge. I do not have the space for things like lathes, pillar drills etc so that's a no go zone for me.

Also should I remove the steel plates for the flywheels or leave them on with the shimms? This is halting me seeing Dad says they will alter the end float and he will not progress the project anymore until that is correct.

Could either of you post a photo of your cases so I know what I will need mine to look like in a few months, or years at this pace.. lol

Robbie when you say put it in the drive side case, are you talking about the oil seal in between the main and primary sprocket bearings? Because this oil seal is too small for the hole in the cases. I haven't even tried taking the bearings out yet... Any tips seeing I don't want to mess this up!

Hi Tim
it looks like the seal you got in the pic is the one that goes on the final drive which the rear chain goes
on as derek said you need to block the oil ways from the gearbox or all the oil in the gearbox will go into the engine also may cause a air leak

Hi Robbie,

Just went out to clean the final drive sprocket etc etc so yes, I found the oil seal finally. I'll replace it probably next week or something or when I get round to that part of the re-assembly. I'm just re-assembling it so it will run, not tuning it yet. There's no point of tuning an engine you don't even know that runs yet haha!

Cheers guys for your cooperation
