PostSubject: Boost Bottles   Boost Bottles Icon_minitimeSun Jun 19, 2011 10:58 am

During my year working in UK in 1985 I went to a lot of Bike events including a Bantam Grass track event.
At that time "Boost Bottles" were banned from their formula.
A hidden advantage perhaps ?
Seems they are appearing on some trials bikes.
Do they boost low down torque or what ?
Has anyone any experience or know how they work ?

I wrote load of stuff on this for you, but lost it. So heres the bones.
!
originated - technology from before second world war, used by scott and used on jet engines in second world war
(doodle bugs).

from 70 to 80's used on mx bikes to improve throttle responce, reed materials in early years, ? not as they are now,
had to be really thick and stiff to stop flutter at high rpm, these thicker reeds would take ages to change direction when opening a throttle after shutting down for corner. Reeds affect the reaction we called it RL (reed lag) .

as a reed valve opens it opens to the reaction of sonic wave and pressure intensity, after the throttle has been opened in the early years these bottles were used to increase reaction and soften Kenny Roberts yam GP racers ferociouse responce /lag his effective throttle was controlled by the reeds opening not his throttle position and hand the lag was known to cause highsides.

the bottle stores the energy and reduces this lag as it provides instant fuel air charge so effects the potential throttle on re opening again so reducing the the lag it produced by the time for the reeds to react to change direction.

Reed valves never close fully when operational on race engines, they close down and open up, a tunned size volume vessel will capture some of the returning sonic wave energy for use when you re open the throttle, as air flow changes far quicker than the reed pettle direction.
hope this makes sence I learnt a lot of this while working for T&N AEPP small engine development works 1984to87

Dad had emergency opp yesterday, an infection in his shoulder caused by diabetis they had to operate ? P.M me john on this john what do you know about this.

I´d not heard of Boost Bottle but had heard of an air-damper attached to the intake manifold on an old Bugatti or whatever it was ... which sounds somewhat similar to your description Derek. In the old days the approach was to avoid creating pressure waves and the modern attitude is to put them to use.

What´s with your Dad´s shoulder Derek? I ask because I had nine days of agony, starting at Easter, and having got rid of the pain now, I cannot lift my left arm sideways more than 30° from my side. I start physio-therapy in the morning and if that doesn´t work I´m up for the knife -- Bursititis or Frozen shoulder or something...? A torn sinew or some such thing?

Hi John
My Dad is still in hospital, he's same vintage to you, and suffers mild diabetis, apparantly in some way this caused a problem inside his bone in the shoulder, I'm concerned as I read up on it and, a customer of mine had his legg off for same thing, quite fritening really, as to what these drugs do that control this problem. I would get yours checked out, they had been treating dad for a pulled musell, by chance a specialist spotted his xray, after his dad had same simptoms, and they operated within an hour, they said had it not been picked up, he could have lost the arm, I'm going to see him later today, he's in Glostershire hospital. I believe he will be out in a day or two, and he's already told me, he's going to cadwell with me next week. ?? !.

PostSubject: I´m Lucky...   Boost Bottles Icon_minitimeSun Jun 19, 2011 10:40 pm

Hi Derek!
I think I am more lucky than your Pa...
I had some sort of gut trouble the week before Easter -- usual runs (after typhoid in Africa was normal for me...) -- but the stool was white and stank to high heaven and I had little blisters in my mouth. Usual JayBee attitude I thought that goes away with no bother -- but then the bother came, the pain in my shoulder was intolerable and I ended up in hospital. The inflamation in the shoulder somehow came from this bacterial or virus infection -- nobody seems to know for sure.
No doubt JohnS could add something there...

But not to upset the Bantam Racers on here I was talking of something different re the Boost Bottle because in the days of air-wave-damper there were no reed valves.

And re Heavy Crankshafts I should be able to give some more useful (I HOPE!) ideas
on this and hope I´m not treading on toes in doing so -- point is I had to do similar exercises, 40 years back with HGVs and doing it for 125/175 Bantams seems really worthwhile.

Just a quick note, tis after midnight and I am trying to help my lad finish his big history assignment to be handed in tommorow. I somehow scientifically surmised it had something to do with absorbing pulse waves. Must have some real benefit on a Grass Track or Trials motor with out a reed valve.
Derek, sorry to hear your Dads unwell. Without all the information the team there have it's hard to make any real comment. Except to say that unfortunately diabetics are more susceptible to infections.
JB, a reactive arthritis is not uncommon after food poisoning, typically Campylobacter.

Thanks JohnS -- after having kipper-poisoning as a kid, typhoid in Kenya and Salmonella in Yemen I ought to haver been wised-up about food poisioning -- but I am plain old-&-stupid. I was really unwell and should have gone to a doctor but they put me -- off a bit.
Anyway its Derek´s Dad what´s poorly and this is supposed to be about Bantam Racing --

-- so I´ll tell that I managed to get in touch with son Slick, at Andreas IoM at last and hopefully I´ll have a name & address for Jurby Curcuit Organisers soon.

Wrong Thread, of course, but who cares -- (perhaps Alan??).

My longstroke trials bike is not much faster than a GoPed so maybe this will help !

...As the saying goes, "You can find them everywhere..." -- so it is with engine tuners.

Cheers!
