| Skipper have you tried removing the lead from your racing boots to solve the gearbox problems. This may also give you the opportunity to do your ventriloquism act, you could well come back to the paddock and say to A.B. I’ve got all the gears got all the gears. Andy collected the rebuilt motor on Tuesday night so he should be at Lydden, but I do not know how many races he intends to do. I will be there with my sponsor’s hat on (if the sun is out). | And the sun shone Had a bit of a chuckle looking at a couple of bantams when the owners explained how lots of parts had to be home made, especially when one was my old bike. | |

| One important fact you have all forgotten to mention. The weather was great, the racing was great, meeting up with old friends was great. The burgers and dog rolls from the catering van were bloody diabolical, I must remember to take a packed lunch with me next time. | |

| Yeah Ned! Terrible grub there at the Lydden `05 do also...except for the chips I kept nicking from Keith Webb. "Cor! look at that Keef!?" and he´d not notice I´d nicked yet another chip. "Here, JayBee!? d´you think we went that quick in our day?" said Keith, -- and yet another chip went without him noticing....
Back to the subject in hand:- I am frigging around, calculating, Bantam acceleration from standstill and need a bit of information PLEASE! Would someone kindly tell me how long it takes with a Bantam to slip the clutch from standstill to the clutch being fully engaged?
I see from published engine dyno results (not many available, it seems!) that no readings are recorded below around 7,000 rpm. Explanation much apprecated.
At the above mentioned meeting Robbie (I´m sure it was... -- but apologies if I got it wrong!!) was a bit late in joining-in, in the Parade and he must have had well over 7,000 revs on the clock as he left the paddock in haste. He must have been `on-the-pipe´ because the exhaust sounded so positive and clean -- wonderful!!
Cheers! JayBee.

With so many variations between bikes and riders - Torque. Trick advance retard ignition. Power band. Clutch design. Gearing. Riders technique. Riders weight, and errr dare I say it big fly wheels.

| Subject: Hi Ned! please answer the Q... Tue Aug 09, 2011 5:56 pm | |
| "Big Flywheels" is dead Ned!
I did some calcs on 4 cases:- a, Known Bantam 125 (2.4kg,96mm), b, 175(3.8kg,136mm) then c, a heavy (4.5kg, 100mm) 125 version and the largest diameter possible in a Bantam C/Case d, 200mm dia with 4.5kg ...
... and c has less stored energy than the lighter but bigger dia b.... (i.e. c has less inertia than b....) -- less still has a, the smallest lightest (of course we all knew that -- NB!!??). The bigger the flywheel the greater the inertia (we all knew that -- NB!!??) BUT! This is the important bit -- the wheels -- being of really large dia and weighing a great deal more (of course, we all knew trhat! what a load of bullshine -- NB!!??) have a lot more inertia than the engine -- (but the engine goes much faster -- NB!!??) and even when taking into account a final drive ratio of ten-to-one the fact is the wheels inertia is greater by a factor of 30.
That is, the engine inertia is SWAMPED by the greater size of the wheels inertia.
And the wheels -- with the bit [and the bloke (in leathers, crash-hat an´`at)] in between -- are what has to be accelerated and since on a racing Bantam there´s absolutely no guts to accelerate until 7000 rpm is reached the clutch has to act as a torque-converter and has to be slipped ACCORDING TO WEIGHT & SIZE OF THE BIT IN BETWEEN THE WHEELS...
Weird -- I just admitted you are right, Ned! Each bloke & bike need a different length of time to slip the clutch from zero to x mph and I am so f...g old I cannot remember how long that would be...?
I´m trying to recall a wonderful Bantam race at Brands when Icarus-1 fired up inmmediately, at the run-&-bump start, and I reckon it must have been more than 5 seconds before I had the clutch fully engaged... But like the man said, "Time stands still at those times..."
PLEASE! Someone? -- give me a bit of time -- in seconds -- clutch slip to full engagement?
Yyyyaaawwwnnn (wake up Nick B...! No nastiness intended -- you are now my hero beating Ian on Peter´s bike like that!)....

| Thanks Alan! Willco, The racing this season seems to have got really lively with surprises... Just wish I could have been there... I just read that Big-G -- Force of Gravity always wins -- one way or another: tipple too much and you fall over... When I dream of Snetterton I fall out of bed. One day it´s gonna kill me....! Cheers, JayBee.

| Top secret -- Peter´s engine has more torque than most (he told me that....) but we don´t yet know how heavy are his flywheels...?
And -- I know the weight of his wheels now -- the one that´s at the back and the other that´s at the front -- which means their combined Moment of Inertia is 24.8lbs.-ft² except when wheelying, of course!! Much lighter than an ordinary road hack which typically amount to 60lbs.-ft²... *** ... Interesting thing though is that the max full-load speed is nowhere near as high as I thought it would be and not a great deal more than a good 175 -- but just enough -- I guess.... What a fantastic race that was at Lydden -- Ian and Nick -- I can understand Peter getting excited -- watching that in real time ....
*** I put this bit of bullshine in -- speacially -- for Nick!!! Cheers!
