Short stroke barrel question

Among my Bantam bite is a s/s engine with 9 fin c/iron barrel instead of the usual 10 but with a bore just short of 58mm. (The c/case mouth  has also been trimmed and the sides welded for strength.)  We shall never know but I wondered is there a  valid reason apart from an over enthusiast machinist.
