Hi,

Work on my rolling frame is nearing completion - need to start gathering bits together for the Clutch and Engine build.

Crankshaft, Bore size, Piston, Rod, Ignition, etc is all sorted.

Are you all using modified Bantam Clutches ?

All Metal Clutches ? Surflex Plates ? extra strong springs, etc ?

I have had quite a bit of experience with Villiers clutches used in 210cc kart racing - these use a billet clutch drum, wet Surflex Plates and 9 x VERY stong springs to prevent slip !!
A modern 210 long stroke engine is good for almost 40 HP.

What sort of BHP does a good 175 make ?

Any help with obtaining the bits would be much appreciated.

I will come up to the Test Day on March 5th - hope to meet some of you there and have a look at the bikes.

Many thanks to Alan and Robbie - their combined advice has got me this far !!

Thanks, Jon

Hi Jon,
At th practice day see me (yet again!!) for clutch springs!!! I have a batch of extra strong ones made up every year and keep them with me when I go racing. cheers
I may not actually be riding at the practice day, so you will be able to find me via other bantam riders that are there.
Cheers,
Alan

Hi all,

Just a quick question to ask, can you use a 175 clutch inside a 125 motor? Seems you can get more plates in plus better efficiency.

Ahh ok then. Cheers for that. I've got 3 small clutch baskets all with new plates in etc so I'll use them then but I will change the springs to heavy duty for non slip.

I believe you sometimes use the old style cork plates with cork removed? I have several, if anyone can use them I'll give them to you (they're in the bl**dy way!)

Hi Greenbat,
we use the surflex type without the surflex cork and then with slits in them, the real early types with cork inserts are junk!
See the bantamracer articles on the main bantam web pages and you willunderstand more!

Alan, do you know where I can get the metal/surflex plates from? I've seen you do heavy duty clutch springs that you sell(?) and that you can grab them from you at meetings, are you going to be at Mallory on the 5th April?
